About
Novelist (Kojo Kankam) is a musician from Lewisham, South East London.
His perceptive approach to all aspects of artistry began at the age of six, using a variety of tools to craft his early compositions. Since then, he’s received remarkable acclaim and respect for his creative output.
After years of local shows at youth clubs and MC freestyles on YouTube, Novelist soon found his way onto radio stations such as Reprezent FM, Flex FM, and Rinse FM which allowed him the platform to reach a wider audience and develop his fan base. In this time period of radio touring, Noveslit had teamed up with producer Mumdance and put out his first single, “Take time”. After the success of their first single together, they created the “1 Sec” EP which was release with XL Recordings. An exciting collaboration that was the first of its kind bridging together the world of Techno and Grime. At the age of 17, Novelist went on his first tour outside of the UK and was also nominated for a MOBO Award in the 'Best Act of Grime' category.
Novelist was now firmly on the radar and earmarked as an emerging artist to look out for when chosen to be on the BBC’s Sounds Of 2015 list. At 18, Novelist featured on veteran Grime artist Skepta award-winning Konichiwa album. The two co-wrote the track titled 'Lyrics' and it proved to be a perfect marriage of styles.
His first Asia, Australia & New Zealand tour at age 18 was a roaring success and his second by age 20 saw the exponential growth of his fan base with fans chanting his lyrics verbatim.
April 13th 2018 Novelist released his debut album “Novelist Guy” and was shortlisted for the Hyundai Mercury Prize 2018 for best album of the year. In more recent times, Nov has focused more on developing himself as a standalone artist, choosing to do fewer collaborations and release music independently on his own label MMMYEH Records.
